All-Natural DIY Toothpaste for Optimal Oral Health

I have recently decided that I need to up my oral health game. Like I do, I researched natural remedies and supplements for oral health. I discovered a homemade “toothpaste” of sorts with three key healing ingredients for teeth and gums.

Coconut Oil

The first ingredient is coconut oil. Coconut oil has many benefits to overall health, so I was hardly surprised to discover its health benefits for teeth and gums. The main benefit is that it reduces the amount of negative bacterias that are in your oral environment. Those bacteria running rampant are what causes bad breath, so, by consequence, it reduces bad breath. It also reduces plaque and inflammation in the gums. All of these results are so important for oral health!

Sea Salt

The next ingredient is sea salt. It is very important that you use sea salt as opposed to table salt. Sea salt contains tons of natural minerals that your teeth need: magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, sodium, iron and nickel. Sea salt has many of the same benefits mentioned above: strengthening gums, reducing tartar buildup, and killing bacteria. It also neutralizes your oral pH and may whiten your teeth.

Clove Essential Oil

Finally, and this ingredient was the most odd to me…clove essential oil! Again, clove essential oil reduced the bad bacteria in your oral biome. It also reduces inflammation, aids in remineralization, and, of course, reduces bad breath. It is really important to check that the oil you use is appropriate for oral use! Most companies have information online that will tell you about each oil.

My Recipe

I made the mistake the first time around of putting too much salt into the mixture….so watch out for that because it was so salty I had to spit it out. The second time I made it, it was much better! I put in a  tablespoon of coconut oil, a pinch of sea salt, and 2 drops of clove essential oil. Then, I dipped my toothbrush in the mixture and slowly and thoroughly brushed each quadrant of my mouth until I used all of the mixture. Next, with the mixture still in my mouth, I thoroughly flossed in between each tooth, making sure no crevice of my mouth was ignored. Then, I brushed my tongue as well.

My Thoughts and Reactions

My first thoughts right after the treatment was that my mouth felt clean and great! My teeth were smooth, my breath was fresh for a long time after, and my gums just felt better! I quickly became addicted to these treatments! I have decided to start brushing my teeth with this mixture once a day and with toothpaste the other time that day.

It is too soon to tell if my oral health is drastically better, but I will update this post when I can definitively say there is noticeable improvement. Probably when I go to the dentist next, but, until then, I can say that my mouth feels great! Also, I always prefer to use all natural remedies when possible. If I can reduce the amount of toxins I take in through my toothpaste by using a completely natural mixture, that is a win for me. It is not usually a good thing to swallow toothpaste--it can cause stomach irritation and sickness and other side-effects. Eliminating those dangers by using all-natural products is the best thing one can do!
